WHEN
Pain
Pain names the threshold at which Lingua Membra is called into use. It is the when of the system, drawn from Saʿdi’s line, ‘When Time afflicts one member with pain.’ Pain here does not name the member’s subjective sensation, but the time of affliction designated by the line: the time at which calamity, catastrophe, violence, loss, or another rupture afflicts a or . Pain precedes the that may give this affliction public form; it does not depend upon another Member first recognising the calamity or responding to it. Pain may arise from a wide range of afflictions such as abandonment, abduction, abuse, agony, alienation, annihilation, apartheid, assault, autocracy, banishment, bigotry, bombardment, brutality, censorship, coercion, colonialism, conscription, containment, corruption, degradation, democide, destitution, discrimination, disenfranchisement, displacement, dispossession, enforced disappearance, enslavement, erasure, ethnic cleansing, eviction, exile, exploitation, extermination, extortion, famine, genocide, grief, humiliation, imperialism, incarceration, indoctrination, injustice, internment, isolation, loss, marginalisation, massacre, mutilation, natural disaster, occupation, oppression, ostracism, persecution, precarity, rape, segregation, silencing, starvation, subjugation, surveillance, terror, torture, trafficking, tyranny, violation, violence, war, and the crushing weight of systemic neglect. Any rupture that befalls a Fibre, whether social, political, ecological, bodily, or historical, can become an immediate point of resonance through their being-with others.
Personal traumata are not secondary to historical catastrophes within this system. A victim or survivor of sexual assault, domestic violence, familial abuse, coercion, or any intimate violation may Wound without requiring their pain to be legitimised through inclusion in public history, legal recognition, or classification as a collective catastrophe. Lingua Membra does not demand confession, narrative disclosure, or the conversion of personal injury into spectacle. The Fibre’s rupture is structurally sufficient.
The system is therefore horizontal by necessity. Its refusal of hierarchy is not grounded only in egalitarian opposition to the subordination of some members to others. It also rejects the claim that anatomical differentiation or cosmological order supplies a transcendent blueprint for collective life. Differences among bodily organs do not authorise a head, heart, sovereign, priest, party, lawgiver, or any other to rule in their image, nor does Lingua Membra recognise a higher cosmological truth whose hierarchy the members must reproduce. It therefore removes any hierarchy among vital organs and members from its own architecture. In this configuration, response is not first a conscious transmission of information, but direct bodily exposure to another body’s distress. Pain requires no validation by a centre; the Wound gives it public address, and Fibres and Members may answer through resonance.
