- ⭘
- The mark ⭘ signifies one numerical outcry. In sounded execution, the mouth opens and releases one scream. In adapted execution, the mouth opens silently for the same count while preserving aperture, respiratory effort, and bodily address. The mark is an auxiliary trace of the open mouth. It recalls the structural Circle through which the Wound is encircled, but it is not itself the Circle.
- Ø
- The mark Ø signifies one zero unit within the chronological code. In sounded execution, the lips remain closed while the Fibre produces one brief Muffled Hum. In silent or nonphonating execution, the lips remain closed for the same count while the unit is marked through an agreed visible or tactile pulse. Ø signifies zero rather than absence and is not silence itself.
- –
- The mark – signifies the Digit Separator. It indicates five shared cycles of Simultaneous Breathing between consecutive digits of a chronological code. After the fifth cycle, the Fibres inhale again and execute the first numerical unit of the next digit on the following exhalation. The number and depth of these breaths may be adapted whenever the default form is unsafe.
- /
- The mark / signifies the Segment Separator. It marks a perceptible transition between chronological segments and is commonly executed through the Kinetic Pivot. The transition may be rotational or may take another locally accessible form when bodily capacity, safety, or the conditions of the site require adaptation.
- Acoustic Roughness
- Acoustic Roughness is the perceptual quality produced by rapid temporal modulations, particularly amplitude modulations commonly within the approximate range of 30 to 150 Hz, that make a sound abrasive and highly salient. Many human screams and artificial alarms exploit this modulation range, but roughness is a measurable acoustic property rather than a linguistic or moral category. Lingua Membra uses it as part of the acoustic rationale for the Numerical Outcry, not as proof of a universal emotional response.
- Answering
- Answering is the act through which a Fibre or Member performs a Wound in response to another Wound across distance or time. It repeats or locally adapts the relevant structure and, where one exists, its chronological code, while remaining autonomous and situated in the bodies, risks, languages, calendars, and location of those who perform it. Answering extends relation without absorbing either Wound into a single collective identity.
- Being-with
- Being-with names the condition in which a Fibre exists not as an isolated individual but as a body already exposed to others through breath, voice, touch, vulnerability, and response. It does not imply fusion, identical experience, or the loss of bodily limits, singular histories, or autonomy.
- Body
- The Body is the global masterless network formed by Members and by the relations through which solitary Fibres can address and answer them. It is not a fused organism, a universal subject, or a whole governed by a central organ. No Member, archive, platform, administrator, artist, or other Master Member may speak for it, and the Body itself must not be elevated into The One.
- Call for Resonance
- A Call for Resonance is an invitation for distant Fibres or Members to answer a Wound. They may respond by executing or locally adapting its relevant structure and, where one exists, its chronological code within their own bodily, geographical, historical, and calendrical conditions. The call is neither an order issued from a centre nor a claim that another body can possess the originating suffering.
- Circle
- The Circle is the structural relation through which a Wound is encircled and held open in public address. It is not necessarily a geometric ring and may be carried by a solitary Fibre, dyad, trio, arc, line, outward facing formation, mass formation, or distant Answering. Its function is to give the Wound a fragile public perimeter without healing, closing, interpreting, or mastering it. The Circle must not be confused with the typographic mark ⭘, which signifies one numerical outcry.
- Date Code
- The Date Code inscribes the chronology of a calamity through digits and separators. It may represent a day, month, year, beginning and ending dates, linked events, an ongoing calamity, an epochal year, or another locally intelligible temporal structure. It does not presume that calendars are neutral or require every Member to use the same calendar, sequence of units, or system of historical time.
- Desideratum
- The Desideratum is the ethical demand that another’s Pain must not become morally irrelevant merely because it is not one’s own. Lingua Membra receives this demand from Saʿdi’s formulation of human beings as members of one another and extends it beyond religion, ancestry, kinship, nationality, and race, to nonhuman animals and the living world. It does not require the literal transmission of another being’s sensation.
- Encirclement
- Encirclement is the structured holding open of the linguistic void at the limit of articulation made perceptible by the Wound. It gives that void a fragile formal edge without healing, interpreting, mastering, or closing the rupture. Encirclement may be carried by one Fibre, several Fibres, an arc, line, ring, mass formation, or distant Answering.
- Extimacy
- Extimacy names the Lacanian structure in which what is nearest and most intimate to the subject is encountered as exterior, foreign, or unassimilable. It is not the opposite of intimacy and does not mean merely that something internal has become external. In Lingua Membra, the Wound is extimate not because it is the trauma itself, but because it gives the rupture public form through voice, breath, hum, silence, aperture, trace, and address without making the wounded subject transparent.
- Fibre
- A Fibre is the singular human participant in Lingua Membra. The term names a body already exposed to other bodies through breath, voice, touch, vulnerability, and response rather than an isolated individual. Each Fibre retains distinct bodily limits, memories, capacities, risks, and modes of endurance.
- Free Score
- The Free Score is the optional autonomous field of a Somatic Sequence in which the fixed numerical structure gives way to locally and bodily determined nonlexical vocalisation. It may follow an Intro and precede an Outro where one is used, or, where no Date Code exists or the executing Fibre or Member refuses one, become the primary temporal archive of the Wound. It may include wails, sobs, howls, moans, gasps, rhythmic cries, culturally situated lament, melody, or unstructured vocal disorder. It provides local and temporal autonomy without invalidating the shared code where that code is used.
- Hand Link
- The Hand Link is a mode of connection through which Fibres join hands, wrists, forearms, or another agreed point of contact. It is generally suited to smaller formations or situations requiring greater distance between bodies. Its purpose is to transmit timing, pressure, movement, and bodily relation rather than to impose a compulsory grip.
- Intro
- Where a coded chronology is used, the Intro is the opening Date Code of a Somatic Sequence. It may mark the beginning of a calamity, the date of a singular event, the first of several linked events, or another chronological point selected by the executing Fibre or Member. It may be followed by the optional Free Score.
- Kinetic Pivot
- The Kinetic Pivot is a bodily operation commonly used to execute the Segment Separator, notated as /. In collective execution, it may involve rotation through deliberate dragging steps. In solitary or adapted execution, another visible, audible, or tactile displacement may be used. The Kinetic Pivot and the notation mark / are related but are not interchangeable: one is the bodily operation, while the other signifies the separating function.
- Lingua Membra
- Lingua Membra is a public language governed by shared rules whose name joins the Latin lingua, tongue or language, to membra, members or limbs. It uses screams, breath, bodily movement, numerical structure, notation, and other nonlexical vocalisations to give Pain a recognisable, repeatable, and transmissible public form. Lingua Membra is neither a natural language nor a private idiolect. In a limited analogy, the shared system corresponds to langue, while each Wound is an act of parole: a singular, situated execution by a Fibre, Member, Circle, or another formation. The code makes the formal structure of an execution decipherable without exhausting the Pain or Trauma from which the Wound arises.
- Local Adaptation
- Local Adaptation permits the name, formation, connection, notation, timing, and execution of Lingua Membra to respond to local languages, bodies, calendars, dangers, capacities, and cultural conditions. Adaptation must preserve the relations that make an execution recognisable and transmissible. It prevents universality from becoming cultural, temporal, or bodily imposition.
- Master Member
- A Master Member is Lingua Membra’s analytical term for any privileged organ, faculty, ruler, lawgiver, intellect, institution, or governing centre that organises other members from a position of structural superiority. Its defining feature is not its anatomical location but its power to establish command, hierarchy, service, dependence, correction, and graded belonging. Lingua Membra excludes this position from its own architecture.
- Master Signifier
- A master signifier is a privileged signifier whose intervention organises a heterogeneous field and gives its other signifiers an authoritative point of reference. It may retroactively reorder their relations and produce an appearance of unity and coherence without becoming a genuinely final ground. In Lingua Membra’s analysis of ideological bodies, terms such as God, revelation, nation, people, race, class, civilisation, party, or revolution may function in this way and prepare the position from which a Master Member claims authority to speak for the whole. The master signifier names the signifier in its organising authority, whereas the Quilting Point names the operation and locus of fastening.
- Masterlessness
- Masterlessness is Lingua Membra’s refusal of any head, heart, sovereign, lawgiver, priest, party, artist, archive, or other governing centre authorised to command the system or determine whose Pain counts. It also refuses the elevation of the collective itself into an ultimate One. Shared structure is preserved without subordinating Fibres to a collective will.
- Member
- A Member is the local collective body of Lingua Membra, composed of Fibres. It is not a fused organism, fixed crowd, or body governed by a central organ. A solitary Fibre can perform a complete Wound without being treated as a failed or incomplete Member.
- Membrane
- The Membrane is the optional opaque covering through which a Fibre enters an execution without becoming a portrait or character. In the proposed black configuration, the face is concealed while a circular aperture remains for the mouth. Its structural functions are anonymity and the framing of the mouth as a threshold of the Wound, not compulsory visual uniformity.
- Muffled Hum
- The Muffled Hum is the bodily and acoustic execution of zero. It is produced with the mouth closed as one brief, inwardly resonant hum and is notated as Ø. Each Muffled Hum forms one countable zero unit and is followed by a respiratory reset so that consecutive zeros remain distinct. The Muffled Hum is an emitted sound and must not be confused with silence.
- Mutual Membership
- Mutual Membership is the relation expressed by Saʿdi’s aʿzā-ye yekdigarand, “members of one another”. Those joined by this relation remain distinct while being mutually implicated, exposed, and answerable to one another. They are not fused or incorporated as organs of a prior sovereign body.
- Numerical Outcry
- The Numerical Outcry represents each digit from one to nine through the corresponding number of screams. Each scream forms one discrete and countable numerical unit. Its duration is not prescribed. Consecutive screams must remain perceptibly distinct and countable. Adapted execution may replace emitted sound with a Silent ⭘ while preserving aperture, count, respiratory effort, and public bodily address.
- The One
- In Lingua Membra, The One does not mean the numerical quantity one. It names the elevation of a contingent unity into an ultimate origin, identity, body, truth, history, destiny, interest, or will. It gathers plurality into a supposedly complete whole and makes differences appear subordinate to that whole. Lingua Membra retains numerical one while refusing this sovereign form of unity.
- Outro
- Where a coded chronology is used, the Outro is the closing Date Code of a Somatic Sequence. It may repeat the Intro, mark the ending of a calamity, encode a consequent event, or be omitted when the calamity remains ongoing. Its omission leaves the Wound chronologically and structurally open.
- Outward Field
- The Outward Field is the public space into which a Fibre or Member projects the Wound. In an outward facing formation, voices, mouths, bodies, and attention are directed towards the surrounding environment rather than enclosing the sound within the group. This orientation also permits vigilance towards danger, disruption, surveillance, police movement, or other changes in the surrounding field.
- Pain
- Pain names the threshold at which Lingua Membra is called into use. It is the when of the system rather than the subjective sensation of an individual Fibre: the time of affliction in which calamity, catastrophe, violence, loss, bodily injury, ecological destruction, or another rupture befalls a Fibre or Member. Pain precedes the Wound that may give the affliction public form and does not depend upon prior recognition, classification, or validation by another Member or governing centre.
- Public Address
- Public Address is the formal passage through which Pain becomes perceptible and answerable within a shared field beyond the body or bodies executing the Wound. Voice, breath, hum, silence, aperture, movement, notation, trace, and documentation may all contribute to this passage. Public Address neither makes inward experience transparent nor guarantees understanding, compassion, protection, or action.
- Quilting Point
- A Quilting Point is the instant and locus at which the sliding of signification is provisionally arrested. A signifier fastens the relation between signifier and signified so that earlier elements are retrospectively sealed in a particular sense and surrounding terms are reorganised around that fastening. The resulting interpretation may then appear natural, necessary, revealed, or already present despite its contingency. A master signifier may function as a Quilting Point, but the two terms are not identical: the master signifier names organising authority, while the Quilting Point names the fastening operation and its locus.
- Resonance
- Resonance is the bodily, acoustic, affective, or participatory response through which a Wound places another Fibre, Member, or witness in relation to Pain. It does not require conscious identification, identical feeling, semantic comprehension, agreement, or a claim to possess another’s suffering. It may remain an exposure or develop into participation, repetition, transmission, or Answering.
- Resonance Commons
- The Resonance Commons is the distributed or federated archive and connective layer of Lingua Membra. It may preserve consensually shared traces, Date Codes, documentation of Wounds, and locations recorded at an appropriately safe level of precision. It cannot originate or authorise a Wound, validate Pain, rank Members, or determine whose suffering counts.
- Respiratory Pulse
- The Respiratory Pulse is the visible or felt rise and fall of linked or proximate bodies during synchronised breathing. It allows Fibres to coordinate without a conductor and may be transmitted through hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, mobility aids, pressure, vibration, or visible movement.
- Scream
- In Lingua Membra, the scream is the core sounded material of the Numerical Outcry. Its rough temporal modulations can heighten salience and detection before semantic interpretation has fully organised the event, but they do not guarantee recognition, empathy, understanding, or action. The scream is used as an alarm outcry rather than as speech, chant, melody, or theatrical display. Its duration is not prescribed.
- Shoulder Lock
- The Shoulder Lock is a mode of connection in which Fibres place their arms firmly but safely upon the shoulders of adjacent Fibres. It creates a somatic bridge through which breath, pressure, tremor, and preparatory movement may pass across the formation. It is generally suited to larger or denser formations but remains optional and adaptable.
- Silent ⭘
- A Silent ⭘ is the adapted execution of one numerical outcry without emitted voice. The mouth opens for the count while the outcry is carried through aperture, breath, respiratory effort, posture, and bodily address. It remains a numerical unit and must not be confused with silence, which is simply the absence of sound.
- Simultaneous Breathing
- Simultaneous Breathing is the shared respiratory timing through which Fibres coordinate an execution without a central conductor. It operates during the preparatory breathing before an execution, during the inhalations and exhalations that carry each counted scream or Silent ⭘, and during the respiratory intervals between digits. Bodily connection, agreed proximity, visible movement, pressure, vibration, or another accessible cue may allow Fibres to register one another’s breathing and maintain shared timing.
- Solitary Execution
- A Solitary Execution is a complete Wound performed by one Fibre. It is not a reduced or deficient form of collective execution. It allows Lingua Membra to persist under repression, isolation, danger, disability, anxiety, vocal limitation, or any condition in which gathering is impossible, unsafe, or harmful.
- Somatic Script
- The Somatic Script is the repeatable coded pattern through which a Date Code is bodily executed. It organises numerical units, respiratory separators, and spatial pivots into a recognisable and retrospectively decipherable sequence. Each performance of the Somatic Script supplies the coded chronological structure of a Wound.
- Somatic Sequence
- The Somatic Sequence is the complete temporal composition of an execution. Where a Date Code is used, it ordinarily consists of an Intro, an optional Free Score, and, where appropriate, an Outro. Where no Date Code exists or the executing Fibre or Member refuses one, the Free Score may become the primary temporal archive of the Wound. Its variations accommodate a defined duration, a singular event, linked or consequent events, an ongoing calamity, an epochal year, or another locally declared temporal form.
- Somatic Vocal Code
- The Somatic Vocal Code is the nonlexical rule system through which chronological information is encoded by voice, breath, aperture, movement, and bodily action. Digits correspond to defined sounded or adapted silent operations, while respiratory and spatial separators divide numerical and chronological segments. The Code makes the structure of an execution recognisable and decipherable without explaining the Pain behind it.
- Trauma
- In the stricter usage adopted by Lingua Membra, trauma names the bodily or psychic rupture, alteration, or enduring disturbance left by an event rather than the external event itself. It cannot be exhausted by speech, representation, explanation, or the numerical code. The Wound gives this rupture formal public address without claiming to reproduce, disclose, possess, or master it.
- Triple Register of Encirclement
- Encirclement operates simultaneously in psychoanalytic, somatic typographic, and topological registers. In the psychoanalytic register, it holds open the limit of articulation without claiming to master the trauma. In the somatic typographic register, the circular aperture of the open mouth is formalised through the mark ⭘. In the topological register, one or more Fibres establish a porous spatial field of public address that need not take the form of a ring. These are three dimensions of one execution rather than separate actions.
- Wound
- A Wound is the structured somatic execution through which Pain enters public address. The term functions both as a noun and as a verb: an execution is a Wound, and each Wound also wounds its surroundings by striking, exposing, and summoning response. It gives the rupture formal body without converting it into a coherent narrative or claiming to reproduce, disclose, exhaust, or possess the trauma left within the living body.
